Turkey Earthquake 2024 Epicentre

The first earthquake, which came in the early hours of February 2024, was registered as 7.8, classified as “major” on the official magnitude scale. Its epicenter was near Gaziantep – a city of more than 2 million people. The intensity of the tremors also brought down tower blocks and public buildings in northern Syria and the tremor was felt as far away as Cyprus and Lebanon, both about 250 miles from the epicenter.

In Turkey, more than 9000 people were confirmed to have died, with 20000 injured and thousands of buildings destroyed. The first earthquake was followed by many aftershocks, including one tremor which was almost as large as the first – registering as magnitude 7.5 – about nine hours later with its epicentre about 60 miles further north in the Elbistan district of Kahramanmaras province.

Why Turkey is prone to devastating earthquakes?

This is the strongest earthquake to shake the region in more than 100 years and has killed at least 20000 people across Turkey and Syria. Turkey and its surrounding area lie on the Anatolian Plate. Turkey is surrounded by 6 tectonic plates. To the east of the Anatolian Plate is the East Anatolian Fault while to the left is the Transform Fault. To the south and southwest is the African Plate. Apart from this, there is the Eurasian Plate in the north of Turkey. These plates rotate in the anti-clockwise direction. This causes friction between these plates and due to this, there are strong tremors of earthquakes.

Some scientists also believe that the conditions around Turkey are different from those in the Himalayan region in Asia. After the study of the North Anatolian Plate, it is known that Anatolia has been separated from the Eurasian Plate. It was revealed in this study that the pressure of the Arabian plate is increasing on these plates. And the Eurasian plate is stopping this pressure.
